Rapids Make History, Capture First ECJLL Championship for New Brunswick

History was made Saturday evening at the Lord Beaverbrook Rink as the Saint John Rapids defeated the Sackville Wolves to complete a three-game sweep of the ECJLL Championship Final and capture the 2026 Garnet Knight Cup.

After opening the best-of-five series with two impressive road victories, the Rapids returned home determined to finish the job in front of their fans. They did exactly that, delivering another complete team performance to secure the championship and cap off an outstanding playoff run.

The victory is significant not only for the Rapids organization but for lacrosse across the province. For the first time since the East Coast Junior Lacrosse League was established in 2004, the Garnet Knight Cup will leave Nova Scotia and be awarded to a New Brunswick team. The Saint John Rapids have etched their names into league history while bringing the championship home to Saint John.

Throughout the championship series, the Rapids showcased the qualities that defined their remarkable season. Balanced scoring, disciplined defensive play, outstanding goaltending, and contributions from every player in the lineup made Saint John a difficult opponent to contain.

After sweeping the Halifax Hurricanes in the semi-finals, the Rapids carried that momentum into the championship series, winning all three games against a talented Sackville squad.

While the celebration is well deserved, the Rapids have little time to rest. With the ECJLL Championship secured, Saint John now shifts its focus to the Founders Cup National Championship, where Canada's top Junior B lacrosse teams will compete for a national title. This year's tournament will be hosted by the Rapids at TD Station, providing the team with the unique opportunity to compete for a national championship in front of its home fans.

The excitement begins with the Founders Cup Opening Ceremonies on August 16, as teams from across the country arrive in Saint John for one of the premier events in Canadian junior lacrosse.
