Rapids Roll and Take Command of their ECJLL Semi-Final Series

The Saint John Rapids opened the 2026 ECJLL Semi-Finals in emphatic fashion Saturday night, overwhelming the Halifax Hurricanes 22-3 at the Lord Beaverbrook Rink to start off the best-of-five series.

Backed by an explosive offensive performance and contributions from throughout the lineup, the Rapids thrilled the home crowd with one of their most complete performances of the season. Saint John built an 8-1 first-period lead, never looked back, and sent a clear message that they are ready for another deep playoff run.

The Rapids came out flying from the opening faceoff. Ben Alchorn opened the scoring with Tripp Livingstone and Nate Williams drawing assists before Adrien Mosher doubled the lead just over three minutes later. Ben Rooney, Kenny MacIntyre, and Felix Harding all found the back of the net as Saint John exploded for five goals in just over seven minutes to put Halifax on its heels early.

Harding continued his dominant opening period with two more goals to complete the hat trick before Drew Mason added another marker, giving the Rapids an incredible 8-0 lead before Halifax managed to break through late in the period.

The second period saw no let-up from the home side.

Sawyer King opened the scoring before Drew Mason struck twice, including a power-play goal, to complete his own hat trick. Rooney and Nate Williams also scored as the Rapids carried a commanding 13-2 advantage into the final twenty minutes.

The intensity briefly boiled over midway through the period as Ian Cassie and Halifax's Cole Van Huizen each received fighting majors and game misconducts, but the Rapids quickly returned their focus to the game and continued dictating play.

Saint John put the finishing touches on the victory in the third period, adding nine more goals in another offensive clinic. Ryan Johnston and Sawyer King both scored shorthanded just over a minute apart before Chase Aldridge buried a power-play marker. Mosher scored twice in the period to complete his hat trick, while Ayden McCaustlin added another. Harding capped off his outstanding night with his fourth goal before Mason also scored his fourth of the contest to close out the 22-3 victory.

The Rapids' balanced offence was on full display.

Felix Harding and Ben Rooney each recorded seven-point nights. Harding finished with four goals and three assists, while Rooney contributed three goals and four assists. Drew Mason matched Harding with four goals while adding an assist for a five-point performance.

Nate Williams quietly orchestrated much of the offence, recording one goal and five assists for six points. Sawyer King collected five points on two goals and three assists, while Adrien Mosher registered a hat trick and an assist. Ayden McCaustlin added a goal and two assists, Hudson Scaplen contributed three assists, and Ondrej Hajek recorded three helpers of his own.

The Rapids also received goals from Ben Alchorn, Kenneth MacIntyre, Chase Aldridge, and Ryan Johnston as 18 different players found the scoresheet in the dominant victory.

Behind the offence, Ondrej Hajek was solid in goal whenever called upon, while the Rapids' defensive unit limited Halifax's opportunities and even chipped in offensively with shorthanded goals that swung any remaining momentum firmly in Saint John's favour. Along with McCaustlin and Johnston, Hudsen Scaplen, Morgan MacKinnon, Adam Brooks and Tyler Weldon are showing their veteran presence on the back end with solid defensive play.

Unfortunately, the series took an unexpected turn following Saturday's contest. Due to a number of injuries, the Halifax Hurricanes were unable to field a lineup for Game 2 and were forced to forfeit, giving the Rapids a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five semi-final series. The Rapids pay special respect to Jack Cowan who suffered a shoulder injury and had to leave Game 1. Cowan has been a force for the Hurricanes throughout his ECJLL career and deserves a tip of the hat.

The teams are now scheduled to return to the floor for Game 3 in Halifax on Friday, July 18, where the Rapids will have an opportunity to complete the series and earn a berth in the ECJLL Championship Final.

With their offence firing on all cylinders, contributions coming from every line, and confidence continuing to grow, the Rapids head into Game 3 carrying plenty of momentum as they move one step closer to the league finals.
